Facebook set to launch smart speakers

Facebook is reportedly planning to launch two smart speakers this summer.

According to Digitimes, Facebook will launch two models: Aloha (which will be marketed as Portal) and Fiona.

Both devices will have 15-inch touchscreens while Portal will have facial recognition technology as well as voice commands.

Portal is also expected to include social networking functions and will benefit from the music licensing contracts that Facebook has signed with Sony/ATV and the Universal Music Group.

Digitimes also suggests Facebook is planning to build its own video consumer device ecosystem within the next five years, with the smart speakers as the first stage of this process.
