Spotify expands student offer with Showtime

The streaming battle has been hotting up since Spotify went public. Bundles have been a key part of the Spotify strategy to sign up users by "adding value" - and students are a prime target audience.

Now Spotify has added Showtime TV to its Spotify Premium For Students package, alongside the existing Hulu bundle. Showtime series include Shameles, Homeland and Sacha Baron-Cohen’s Who Is America?, along with a film library including Girl On The Train and Baby Driver.

With strong competition from Apple Music and continued growth from Amazon Music Unlimited, as well as expansion plans from Deezer, Spotify is seeking partnerships for its strategy of growth ahead of profits. It recently linked up with Samsung on a long-term deal including compatibility with the Apple tech rival's first smart speaker.

Alex Norström, chief premium officer, Spotify, said: "Spotify Premium has just changed the content game for students. By joining forces with Showtime and continuing our relationship with Hulu, Spotify Premium is now able to give students a complete world of music and video content, shows and film. This latest offer for US students — both the millions already on Spotify Premium and those who are new — really is huge. Never before have students had this level of streaming entertainment options, at this unprecedented value, all in one package."

The bundle is open to new subscribers for $0.99 for the first three months.
