Spotify upgrades family plan, holds price steady

Spotify has announced the launch of its upgraded family plan.

Following reports of planned increases at the streaming giant, the notable development with the all-new Spotify Premium Family plan is that it’s the same price – £15 or $15 in the US. It follows reports that the streaming giant was testing price increases in Scandinavia.

Spotify said the new version of the Family Plan provides more choices to customise music streaming and podcasts. It also adds parental controls on explicit content following requests on community boards.

The plan maintains the six accounts, while adding features such as Family Mix (a personalised playlist updated regularly) and a family hub that allows billing users to manage settings in one place.

But it’s ultimately a bit of a non-announcement that suggests Spotify is keen to underline a message of no price increases as it targets continued subscriber growth.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the Spotify Premium experience, and the upgraded Premium Family plan brings new features to how families enjoy listening to music and podcasts they love.” said Alex Norstrom, chief premium business officer. “At a time where parents are trying to reduce screen time for both themselves and their family, we’re creating more ways for families to bond over music together, while still celebrating individual tastes and giving parents more control if they want it.”

The most listened to artists by Spotify Premium Family subscribers globally include Ariana Grande, Drake, Queen, Billie Eilish and Khalid.

In select markets, the Disney Hub gives access to soundtracks from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel movies, as well as Star Wars instrumentals.
