YouTube seals Coachella livestream deal


YouTube will once again exclusively livestream this year’s Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California.

It’s the eighth year in a row that the video streaming service will be at the festival, in partnership with T-Mobile in the US, Optus in Australia, and Garnier in Canada. It will show the festival on Coachella’s YouTube channel from April 13-15, including performances from Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Odesza, Post Malone, The War On Drugs, Borns and many more.

The four different stages will each have their own livestream feed, including a VR180 channel accessible to viewers with headsets such as Google Cardboard and Daydream View. Fans can also create their own viewing schedules, after which YouTube will follow artists’ performances as they come, changing stages automatically.

Highlights from the weekend will be available through a video-on-demand hub, including artist interviews. Coachella and verified line-up artists will be able to post performance and livestream updates directly in Google search using the new integration that allows artists to customise content.

YouTube continues to push its artist credentials ahead of the expected launch of its new subscription service. Lyor Cohen, the former Warner boss who is now YouTube’s global head of music, recently said: “Breaking artists is my drug and now, here at YouTube, I can do so on a massive, global scale.”
