Rising Star: Meet Black Butter Records' Patrick Lubega

Rising Star: Meet Black Butter Records' Patrick Lubega

How did you break into the music industry?

I started off in music by presenting and hosting shows with my friends at an online station called Climax Radio, while also working with 2K Management [J Hus, Young T & Bugsey].

I then moved onto Reprezent Radio where I built my confidence and started interviewing artists and doing my own networking events called #MakeitHappen.

GRM Daily then took me in as a producer for their show on Radar Radio, and I then started producing videos and became an A&R for the videos on the channel.

After my small contribution to the amazing year independent urban acts had in 2017, I began to get a lot of offers from labels and went on to pick Black Butter [J Hus, Zara Larsson].

What’s your proudest achievement so far?

Discovering talent throughout last year and helping the artists I worked with to get millions of views. Some have been signed, some are still rising.

I’d also have to say joining Black Butter and receiving a plaque for J Hus’ Common Sense album. Aside from all of those, I still have a lot to achieve.

What is the music industry’s biggest problem in 2018?

Music is getting picked up by labels either way too late or too early, there’s no balance at the moment.

Some artists need organic growth and the audience need to buy into them as people before they’re seen as a signed artist.

Why is the music industry a unique place to work?

There are no rules or a formula for being successful – you get out what you put in. And there are always new lanes that can be explored.

What is the key to spotting talented acts early on?

Keep your eyes on the ground, go to live shows, keep a close eye on social media and sign what you love and believe in.

What’s your greatest ambition?

I would love to work with and be mentioned alongside the names of people that I look up to and who have built our scene up to what it is today.

Also, I’d like to be a part of the new generation of artists, managers, A&Rs and so on that are breaking rules.
