Dice lines up top names for Girls Music Day 2018

Live music ticketing discovery app Dice has announced return of its annual Girls Music Day this Saturday, April 28.

Now in its fourth year, the event aims to empower young women to strive for music careers through a series of workshops and panel discussions.

It will take place from 10am to 4pm at the Dice HQ at 92-96 De Beauvoir Road, London, and is open to those aged 16 to 24 and will feature big names such as host Jen Long, DJ and BBC Radio 1 presenter Abbie McCarthy and Mercury-nominated band The Big Moon. Admission is free via online application here

Long said: “I’m excited to host Girls Music Day this year, especially with it being such a momentous year of women fighting to be heard. In 2018, the lack of female figures within our industry is shocking, especially with the discouraging gender diversity in this year’s festivals.

"The main purpose is to engage and inspire the young people attending to work in music, to help them develop their career plans, and to bring up the next generation who will help push for equality in the industry. We’ve got an astonishing collection of speakers this year all offering great advice on that first stepping-stone into music. We’d urge all girls to get involved."

Previous speakers have included Laura Marling, Rae Morris and Jamz Supernova.

A recent study revealed that only 16% of chart-topping artists over the past six years were women, and behind the scenes, the ratio of male producers to female producers is 49 to 1.

To tackle this disparity, the event will feature talks, Q&As, three specialist workshops and a discussion panel which brings together four women from London music tech companies into conversation on the changing ways the industries intersect. Alison Donald (Kobalt), Lizzie Dickson (YouTube), and music editor Leonie Cooper.

Future songwriters will also be able to gain an insight into writing hit songs via a Q&A with Jess Sharman (SheWrites), followed by a live demo clinic from Abbie McCarthy (BBC Introducing, Radio 1 DJ).
