'It's created a new world for his music': Inside the West End show based on Bob Dylan's songbook

Girl From The North Country, the critically acclaimed London show based on Bob Dylan’s songbook, is set for a New York run – possibly in 2018 – according to the show’s producer.

Following the first run at the Old Vic last year, the show’s currently enjoying a successful West End transfer at the Noel Coward Theatre (until March 24) and is then set to go to New York.

“We might do some changes for New York when we take it over there, but at the moment we’re staying true to what we’ve created at the Old Vic,” said co-producer Steven Lappin. “We’re having active conversations, it is possibly 2018.”

While the New York location is to still be confirmed, Lappin teased that “it’s a venue that Bob Dylan’s approved of”.

He added: “We’re hoping it’s going to have an extensive life, there’s huge international appeal. Because of Bob’s international audience there’s obviously interest across the planet.”

The former Sony Music creative director liaised with Dylan’s manager, Jeff Rosen, on the original proposal from writer/director Conor McPherson. Dylan himself greenlit the project when he was in London to play the Royal Albert Hall in 2013.

Speaking in the latest issue of Music Week, Lappin said: “We couldn’t approach it like a jukebox musical, we had to get the story right.”

Lappin co-produced with Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons of Runaway Entertainment, along with David Mirvish and Sony Music Entertainment UK.

“The show has been well received by audiences of all ages,” said Phil Savill, MD, Commercial Music Group, Sony Music UK. “For those unfamiliar with Dylan, it’s a way into his catalogue, and for existing fans the choice of songs encourages them to dig deeper.”

Lappin added: “It’s created a new world for his music to live in, so there’s no reason why this can’t be a very important part of his legacy. It shows to other artists that if you get the story right and you get the right team around it, then you can create wonderful moments using the music.”
