BBC TV to screen Pet Shop Boys live at Radio 2's Hyde Park festival

BBC Four is to screen the Pet Shop Boys’ set live from Radio 2’s Hyde Park festival on September 15.

The pop duo are to headline at BBC Radio 2 Live In Park in front of a crowd of 50,000. Their only UK gig this year is tipped to include high-profile guests. It follows their surprise appearance during The Killers’ set at Glastonbury.

Speaking to Music Week earlier in the summer, Jeff Smith, Radio 2’s head of music, said: “It’s their only UK appearance, it’s a festival exclusive, and it’s going to be great on Radio 2, and the red button, and all the platforms we use. We’ll get a great look at what will primarily be a hits set, but there will be some new songs in there we hope as well. I think all the other acts will doff their caps to Neil and Chris. It’s going to be a very special day.”

Last year’s headline performance from Kylie Minogue – an ’80s-fest featuring special guests Jason Donovan and Rick Astley – was screened on BBC One at 10.30pm on the same evening.

The 2019 edition of the one-day festival also features Bananarama, Emeli Sande, Status Quo, Kelsea Ballerini, Simply Red, Westlife and Clean Bandit.

BBC Four will also screen a Pet Shop Boys Top Of The Pops special following the Hyde Park performance.

(Updated September 11) During their appearance on the Jo Whiley Breakfast Show, the duo confirmed that their new as-yet-untitled album will be released on January 24. Its working title is Berlin - a nod to the recording sessions in the German capital.

Lead single Dreamland is a collaboration and co-write with Years & Years.

"It works very well with the Pet Shop Boys sound," said Neil Tennant of Olly Alexander's voice.

Pet Shop Boys have also confirmed a greatest hits tour, Dreamworld: The Greatest Hits Live, in May/June 2020. The dates are below:

May 28 – The O2, London
May 29 – Manchester Arena, Manchester
May 30 – Resorts World Arena, Birmingham
June 2 – BIC Arena, Bournemouth
June 3 – Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff
June 5 – Utilita Arena, Newcastle
June 6 – SSE Hydro, Glasgow
