MTV Unplugged returns with Shawn Mendes

MTV Unplugged is set to return in the autumn with a performance from Shawn Mendes filmed at the Theater at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. The first episode of the revived series is set to air on September 8 in the US, according to Variety.

MTV Unplugged ran regularly from 1989 to 1999, and then appeared less frequently for the next decade. Since 2010 there have been occasional specials across the international MTV network and online.

In its prime, the series regularly featured major artists reinterpreting their back catalogue as an acoustic performance alongside cover versions. MTV Unplugged performers included Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Adele.

Album releases of the MTV concerts were often commercially successful. Nirvana’s Unplugged In New York has total sales of 854,158 according to Official Charts Company data.

Last month MTV announced plans to revive Total Request Live as part of a return to music programming following a recent focus on reality TV.
