'She's a wonderful artist': Dua Lipa leads UK charge at Grammys

BPI and BRIT Awards chief executive Geoff Taylor has saluted “wonderful artist” Dua Lipa, following her double win at the Grammys.

Lipa won in the Best New Artist category and she secured a second award on the night for her role in Electricity, the Silk City track that was named Best Dance Recording.

“She’s a wonderful artist, we’re glad she’s appearing at the BRITS again this year,” Taylor told Music Week.

Lipa performed a duet with St Vincent and can expect a Grammys sales boost in the US following the screening. In her acceptance speech, she acknowledged the controversy surrounding Grammys president Neil Portnow’s comments the previous year about female artists needing to "step up".

“I guess this year we’ve really stepped up,” she said.

Lipa is set to perform for the BRITs at The O2 on Februrary 20 with Calvin Harris as part of a medley featuring Sam Smith and Rag’N’Bone Man. She won two BRITs last year and is up for four this time, though can only win a maximum of two as One Kiss and IDGAF are both up for the same categories (British Single and British Artist Video).

While it wasn’t a strong year for UK talent at the Grammys, there was recognition for Mark Ronson for his role in Silk City and Ella Mai, who won Best R&B Song for Boo’d Up - but missed out on the bigger prize for Song Of The Year.

“We always want to see British artists doing well in the United States, it’s the most important export market for us,” said Taylor. “Having British artists involved in the Grammys is very significant.”

Bring Me The Horizon failed to convert their nomination for Best Rock Song into a win on the night.

Ed Sheeran lost out in the big categories at last year’s Grammys nominations, as well as failing to win any of the BRITs for which he was in the running.
