Stormzy gets huge Spotify boost after double BRITs win

Stormzy’s Spotify streaming figures have increased by more than double following the BRIT Awards.

The South London rapper won awards for Best British Male and Best British album, seeing off competition from Ed Sheeran, among others.

Stormzy also stole headlines with an attention-grabbing closing performance featuring a new freestyle that took aim at Prime Minister Theresa May and the Daily Mail.

According to figures released by Spotify, streams of Stormzy’s catalogue increased by 116%, with fellow winners and performers Dua Lipa (31%), Foo Fighters (41%) and Rag’N’Bone Man (88%) also seeing a spike in streams.

Streams of Oasis’ Live Forever – which Liam Gallagher performed in tribute to the victims of the Manchester terror attack after Ariana Grande pulled out – have increased by 105%.

The increases were calculated by comparing UK streams from Thursday, February 22 with the same day the previous week (February 15).

Tomorrow’s chart will give further indication of night’s big winners, with Dua Lipa’s IDGAF and its self-titled parent album positioned in the Top 5 of the singles and albums charts respectively, according to the latest Midweeks.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ has been ubiquitous in the upper reaches of the chart since its release, and currently sits at No.2. The singer delivered a performance of Supermarket Flowers and took home the Global Success award.

Jorja Smith may also be expecting a boost in streams, after Spotify unveiled a new TV advertisement starring the 2018 Critics’ Choice winner during last night’s ceremony. The film, directed by Olivia Rose and made by an all-female crew, features the singer performing debut single Blue Lights.
