'Writers need to back themselves': Maisie Peters talks co-writing as new single drops

Maisie Peters has stressed the importance of emerging songwriters “backing themselves” in co-writing sessions.

Signed to Atlantic, Peters stars in On The Radar in the new edition of Music Week, out now, and recently made her first trip to Los Angeles for a series of writing sessions.

“I’ve learned that I’m actually alright at this!” said the 18-year-old. “It’s really important to back yourself when you collaborate with people and know, ‘I’m here because I can write and I can go to sessions and write the songs I want to.’”

Peters said she prefers to “do quite small sessions, normally just me and one other person, or two others,” and noted that she’s also “been doing a lot more work on my own too, taking it back to how I used to do it.’”

Peters releases a new single, Stay Young, today (February 15) and starts a new UK tour at Brighton’s Komedia on March 4.

Citing a long list of inspirations stretching from listening to Lily Allen, Ellie Goulding and Girls Aloud in her youth, Peters also enjoys the “storytelling” favoured by acts such as Maren Morris and Dave.

I want to make necessary music

“I’m just writing,” she said. “My first album is a little way off, I’d like to put out another body of work before I do an album. I take albums very seriously and I feel it should be a really cohesive work that covers a specific period or emotional theme.”

Peters toured with Tom Walker last year and learned from the experience of the machinations of a debut album campaign.

“I want to make necessary music, songs that have been constructed in a way that makes you want to listen, pay attention and feel something afterwards,” she said. “That’s really important to me.”
