Under the microscope this week is Canadian singer Helena Deland…
KEY TRACK: Claudion
LABEL: Luminelle Recordings
MANAGEMENT: Chivi Chivi
INSTAGRAM: @helena_deland
WHO: Helena Deland, a Canadian singer-songwriter whose sparse songs stretch from synths to folk.
WHAT: A purveyor of, as she styles it, “sincere pop”, Deland uses gentle synths and smoky atmospheres to create beautiful ebb and flow.
WHERE: Deland is from Montreal, and though her keyboards add sparkle, she certainly taps into the noirish sonic elements of Leonard Cohen’s hometown.
HOW EXACTLY?
Her Altogether Unaccompanied EP is part of a series of releases under the umbrella From The Series Of Songs. Deland says each “volume” is really a collection of memories and “more like a box of old photos or unsent letters” than a regular tracklist.
A BRIGHT FUTURE, THEN?
Deland is playing a handful of European dates this month, including London’s Sebright Arms on October 24.
WHAT SHOULD I PLAY?
Latest single Lean On You showcases Deland’s abilities to stir the soul.
