Apart from its secondary school, Cheney Lane is like many other roads in east Oxford: quiet, tree-lined and unassuming. In the 1980s, two of the school’s students, Mark Gardener and Andy Bell, would record vocals in Bell’s bedroom.

That was before they’d formed Ride, who’d go on to net Creation Records its first Top 75 hit with their 1990 debut EP and become a British institution.
