Simon Fuller: 'No Spice Girls biopic... For now'

Simon Fuller: 'No Spice Girls biopic... For now'

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you will have noticed the music industry’s current fascination with artist biopics.

After the staggering global box office (and streaming) success of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Elton John’s Rocketman has also been a hit, as well as providing some pertinent lessons for the music business.

But, while the rest of the music industry is casting around for the next biopic hit, Spice Girls co-manager Simon Fuller has ruled out committing the story of Girl Power to celluloid, at least for the foreseeable future.

Instead, Fuller is working on an animated Spice Girls film.

“I love Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, because the songs are so fantastic,” Fuller told Music Week. “When you have real life stories that brilliant, no one can write that stuff. But a biopic for the Spice Girls? Maybe one day.”

For now, however, Fuller – who now manages the Spice Girls in partnership with this year's MITs Award winners Richard Griffiths and Harry Magee of Modest! – said he is concentrating his efforts on the cartoon, and the Girls’ staggeringly successful current stadium tour.

We’re more focused on the fun end and the animated side of things

“We’re more focused on the fun end and the animated side of things,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot more fun and youthful, and not a biopic by any means. But one day, I’m sure. It’s a phenomenal story, I’ll tell you that! One of the things that came over [in the live show] was the Girls reflecting on their humble beginnings and there they are in Dublin in front of nearly 80,000 people. It’s mind-blowing and very humbling for them. Their story is inspiring.”

Fuller also said the animated film could be the catalyst for the band to record some new music.

“With our animated movie, that would open up a whole different range of opportunities so in that context, [new music is] quite possible,” he said. “But as things stand in the context of the Spice Girls we know now, probably not.”
