Childish Gambino, Florence + The Machine win big at UK Music Video Awards

This Is America was one of the most talked about videos of the past year, and it earned rapper Childish Gambino his breakthrough UK hit. So it was perhaps no surprise that it was named Video Of The Year at the UK Music Video Awards at London’s Roundhouse (October 25).

Donald Glover, the star and creator of TV drama Atlanta, records under his Childish Gambino alter-ego. This Is America, directed by Glover’s visual collaborator Hiro Murai, has racked up 418 million views on YouTube.

As well as being named best International Urban Video, This Is America also won director of photography Larkin Seiple the award for Best Cinematography in a Video.

Director Autumn de Wilde collected the awards for Best UK Rock Video and Best Choreography in a Video for Florence + the Machine’s Big God.

French artists and directing duo The Blaze won their third successive UKMVA for an international video: Queens triumphed in the Best International Dance Video category.

The Best Production Company award was won by Somesuch in recognition of a run of videos over the past year for artists including Chaka Khan, Florence + The Machine, Stormzy and King Krule.

Young Fathers collected the Best Artist award for their body of music video work in the past year.

UK industry stalwart Carrie Sutton was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award. The first female winner, Sutton has worked as a commissioner, producer, and director’s rep for more than 20 years, with artists including U2, Supergrass, Blur, Noel Gallagher, Snow Patrol, Goldfrapp and Take That, as well as Robbie Williams throughout his solo career.

Dua Lipa and director Henry Scholfield won again in the UK Pop category.

In the live categories, the revival of MTV Unplugged with Biffy Clyro at the Roundhouse secured victory for director Sam Wrench and MTV UK.

The 11th annual UK Music Video Awards ceremony was presented by Adam Buxton, who hosts the Bug show featuring “interesting, brilliant and strange” music videos along with their accompanying pithy YouTube comments.
