Dua Lipa's New Rules hits 1 billion YouTube views

Dua Lipa’s video for New Rules has passed a billion views on YouTube.

The streaming milestone makes the UK singer the youngest solo female artist to pass a billion views for a video on the platform.

Music Week reported earlier this year on how the video was a key factor in driving the single’s success and her breakthrough as a debut album artist. Released in June, New Rules peaked at No.1 and has UK sales to date of 1,229,212, according to the Official Charts Company.

Dua Lipa said: “This is surreal! I never expected that New Rules would get the reaction it did. Videos are so important to me and I’m so grateful that fans discovered this one and loved it so much. It’s been life changing.”

“This is an incredibly beautiful moment for Dua and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her to YouTube’s Billion Views Club,” said Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music. “It’s been amazing to watch her journey from sharing covers on YouTube to now being covered by fans across the globe.”

New Rules is the 100th video to reach an audience of one billion on YouTube. It took 223 days to reach that total and helped build the singer’s subscriber base from 800,000 to 4.9 million.

Dua Lipa is nominated for five BRIT Awards and will perform at the ceremony next week.
