US publishers push for music industry unity
Industry unity, fair rates for songwriters, reforming the consent decrees and putting an end to the safe harbour system were among the topics discussed during the densely packed 99th annual meeting of the National Music Publishers Association. The event, which took place June 8 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square in New York, was held in a larger room than last year to accommodate the increasing number of people who attend what has become a fixture in the agenda of the US music industry. Representatives from such organisations as the RIAA, A2IM, the Recording Academy, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, Global Music Rights, SoundExchange, the MMF, among others, were present at the meeting.
The Who and Bill Curbishley do not endorse proposed Quadrophenia sequel
Rumours of a sequel to Quadrophenia, the classic 1979 film based on The Who’s rock opera of the same name chronicling the story of London mods by the seaside, have been quashed by Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and Bill Curbishley (the producer of Quadrophenia, McVicar, The Railway Man and the manager of The Who). Contrary to reports that The Who had endorsed the supposed sequel, nothing could be further from the truth. Producer Bill Curbishley commented: “Quadrophenia has an enduring appeal and will forever be THE definitive mod film. Quadrophenia is a significant and influential film based on The Who’s music not some Carry on Franchise. Any follow up to this film could only be made by the authors of the original and would need to be worthy of the name. This karaoke sequel announced recently in the press would be totally ridiculous”.
Dome And MVKA partner to release new Shaun Escoffery album
Dome Records and MVKA Music have joined forces to release Evergreen, the new album by Dome artist Shaun Escoffery, in the UK and Europe. Dome Records, which is recognised as the leading soul music label in Europe and celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, released Escoffery’s 2014 album In The Red Room. The partnership with MVKA will enable Dome to draw on MVKA’s marketing and distribution expertise - both domestic and international – with distribution for Evergreen through ADA/Warner.
ICMP elects new Board and Bureaux
Cannes/Brussels, 8 June 2016 - ICMP held its Annual General Assembly (GA) during Midem on 4 June in the presence of some 60 publishers from across the globe. A new Board and Bureaux for the term of 2016-2018 were duly elected. The Executive Bureau was appointed by the newly elected Board with unanimous approval for Andrew Jenkins to serve as Chair, Nicolas Galibert and Rolf Budde as Vice Chairs, Ralph Peer II as Treasurer, and Goetz von Einem as Secretary. “For some time, we have been raising our concerns about how online platforms that use copyright-protected content to attract audiences for economic benefit are not fairly sharing the value generated with rightsholders. In fact, most of the time they are not sharing this value at all,” said ICMP Director General Coco Carmona.
Universal Music Publishing Group appoints Ana Rosa Santiago VP, Latin Music
Ana Rosa Santiago has been appointed to a new role as VP of Latin Music at Universal Music Publishing Group, reporting to Alexandra Lioutikoff, executive VP of Latin Music, UMPG. Santiago joins UMPG from ASCAP, where for 18 years she ran the PRO’s operation in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and signed such artists and songwriters as Daddy Yankee, Tito Bambino, Luis Fonsi, Kany Garcia, Pedro Capo, and Sky & Bull Nene among many others. Prior to ASCAP she worked in a creative role at Peer Music, working with writers in the US, Central and South America.
A2IM Announces 2016 Board Of Directors election results
A2IM, the American Association of Independent Music, announces the results of their 2016 Board of Directors elections as voted by the A2IM label membership. Stephanie Alexa (ATO), Glenn Dicker (Yep Roc Music Group), Andrew Kautz (Big Machine), and Louis Posen (Hopeless Records) are A2IM's newly elected officers for the 2016-2017 year. A2IM CEO Richard James Burgess said in a statement, "Once again we were honored with a dense field of highly-qualified candidates for our four open board positions. While this posed a difficult decision for our voters, I am thrilled with those chosen. A2IM is currently on the forefront of game-changing issues for labels, their artists and our industry at large. With the depth of experience and quality of expertise we are so fortunate to have on our board I am confident we will be able to meet all challenges and vigorously represent our growing Independent community’s interests."
