Podcasts get greater prominence in 'streamlined' new Spotify library menu

Spotify has announced details of a long-overdue redesign of the library section of its app, that will give podcasts greater prominence.

Available to premium users, the new look library menu replaces the small individual tabs for playlists, songs, albums, podcasts, videos, etc and introduces two clear tabs, music and podcasts, which then allow access to submenus.

Within the new options, users will then be able to choose between playlists, artists and albums for music, while the podcasts section offers a selection between episodes, downloads and shows.

It is not currently clear from the explainer video (below) whether the previous options tabs of songs, "Made For You", stations and video will feature on the service, or if the new menus are customisable by users.

"Right away, you’ll notice that Your Library is streamlined, and all it takes is a tap or swipe to toggle between new tabs for Podcasts and Music," Spotify told users in a blog.

"Under each of those sections, you’ll see how quickly you can control and access the content you want... From podcasts to music, the refreshed Spotify will help you manage and access all your audio content in a more personalised, streamlined manner.

Spotify has been making a big play for non-music content in recent times, and acquired podcasting firms Parcast, Gimlet and Anchor earlier this year. In February, Spotify announced it had posted its first profit after hitting its Q4 target of reaching 96 million subscribers.
