Spotify bundled with Hulu in subscription offer

Spotify had been busy driving subscriber numbers in the run-up to its IPO, as well as launching in new territories. Now as it targets continued growth after going public, the streaming giant is partnering with TV subscription service Hulu on a joint offer.

Following a quiet launch last year as part of a student plan, Spotify Premium with Hulu has now been expanded as a wider $12.99 monthly offer for US users. The TV and film streaming service created original series including The Handmaid’s Tale.

“Our student launch with Hulu was incredibly well received and we are excited to extend our reach by bringing Hulu to more of our Premium members in the US,” said Alex Norstrom, chief premium business officer at Spotify. “Hulu’s TV content is highly acclaimed, and with this exclusive Spotify offer we are bundling two top media platforms for an unbeatable price. This is just one example of how we can add value to our premium members day after day.”

The Swedish company is being chased by Apple Music in the US and the tech giant has also been targeting students. The Hulu offer is a quick measure to try and grab more subscribers in the biggest music market.

Following its April 3 IPO, Spotify is rumoured to be readying a branded smart speaker – the company has scheduled an unspecified announcement for April 24.

A more intriguing development, reportedly set be announced around the same time, is a new version of the free service, which would enable users to access playlists more quickly and have more control over what songs they hear on popular playlists.

Spotify executives remain committed to the free service to encourage users to upgrade to the premium version.
