Spotify introduces new playlists for Messenger

Spotify has announced the introduction of Group Playlists for Messenger, a new way of creating playlists with friends on the Messenger App.

The new feature is designed to allow users to create a Group Playlist, share it with their friends and add songs to it directly within the Messenger app.

Once someone has created a Group Playlist, others in the conversation can add more songs directly through the Spotify Chat Extension, available by tapping the blue + icon next to the composer — even if they’re not on Spotify.

Last week, the streaming platform announced that its revenue rose 50% to €2.9 billion (£2.56bn) in 2016, with the streaming giant pledging to pay record labels in excess of €2.2bn (£1.94bn) over the nest two years.

The financial filing, which was posted this morning, follows recently inked windowing contracts with Universal Music Group and Merlin, which represents a wide range of independent labels. However, the filing doesn’t offer any details on how the €2.2bn will be allocated.

The company also announced that its total number of active users has now hit 140 million in a blog post on its official website.
