Today (November 7) Spotify have revealed that the Spotify Free tier may soon be available on the connected speaker of your choice. In an official press release, Spotify have confirmed that their commercial partners’ SDK now allows hardware partners to offer the Spotify Free mobile experience, in addition to the Spotify Premium, on their devices.
According to Spotify’s official website, Spotify Connect currently works on over 300 products across 80 hardware brands, though some devices require Spotify Premium.
Any connected hardware partner will now have the opportunity to use eSDK 3 to allow users to enjoy music and podcasts on Spotify Free via Spotify Connect-enabled speakers.
Speaking about the change, Mikael Ericsson, senior product director at Spotify, commented: “The release of our new eSDK will change the game for Spotify’s Free users who want to enjoy music on their connected speakers. We look forward to supporting our partners over the coming months as they update existing speakers and bring new products to market.”
Spotify has struggled for traction in the smart speakers sector, as most devices default to their own service, whether that be Amazon (Echo), Apple Music (HomePod) or YouTube Music/Google Play Music (Google Home).
