Some 25 miles north-west of Boston, Massachusetts, you will find Lowell. A former mill town bisected by the rushing waters of the Merrimack River, its principal claim to fame is Jack Kerouac.
Here the king of the Beat Generation was born, here he found inspiration for works like Doctor Sax and Visions Of Gerard and here, finally, he was laid to rest.
In many ways it remains unchanged – Kerouac’s descriptions still applicable to Lowell’s industrial skyline and ice-strangled winters.
