This year’s Record Store Day was the most successful in its 10-year history, with sales soaring a whopping 40% on last year’s outing.
The increase comes as album sales increased by 35% and singles nearly 50%.
Record Store Day organisers also expect the increase in sales to continue over the coming weeks, as music fans continue to search for limited editions.
Over 230 shops participated this year, with several new stores getting involved for the very first timke. Among them was Revolution Vinyl, said in a statekment: “We had such a good weekend. We had no idea what to expect and were really chuffed with the support locally. We took over 8 times more vinyl than normal and were excited to welcome lots of new customers through the door.”
Speaking to Music Week about this year’s event, Jon Tolley, co-owner of Kingston’s Banquet Records – winner of the Independent retailer gong at this year’s Music Week Awards – hailed the Record Store Day 2017 a major success.
“With the beginning of the queue in line at 7:30AM the day before, Record Store Day again took another step up. We were about 15% up on last year when we thought that could never be beaten.”
Meanwhile, Ashlie Green of David’s Music in Letchworth, added: "What an amazing day to celebrate 10 years of Record Store Day. It's been another great year with a fantastic cross section of genres and artists to cater to all tastes and moods. From classic heritage artists; David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Smiths and The Cure that appeal to a wide audience, to newer acts; Cabbage, Slaves & Blossoms to draw in a younger crowd who will hopefully become hooked for the other 364 days of the year! We are so chuffed with the turn out and the enthusiasm we had on the day and we are so excited to hear similar stories from shops across the country. Here's to the next 10 years!"
This year also saw David Bowie crowned as the event’s top selling artist over the past 10 years. The late star appears 11 times across the Top 10 Record Store Day albums and singles. He has also notched up more Record Store Day No.1s than any other artist, taking the top spot on the Record Store Day albums chart with The Man Who Sold the World in 2016 and Cracked Actor in 2017. On the singles front, he had a three year run at No.1 with 2014’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide, 2015’s Changes and 2016’s TCV15.
However, this year indie legends The Smiths dethroned Bowie from the 2017 singles chart with a previously unreleased version of The Boy With The Thorn In His Side.
