As the music world marks the anniversary of the death of David Bowie today (January 10), the Official Charts Company has revealed that 5 million records have been sold in the two years since his passing.

The OCC data shows that 3.1m Bowie singles and 2m albums have been consumed in the UK across physical, downloads and stream-equivalent sales over the 24 months.

On what would have been Bowie’s 71st birthday (January 8), Parlophone issued a previously unreleased Let’s Dance demo mixed by Nile Rodgers. It’s the latest catalogue material in a series of 14 releases – new greatest hits, live recordings and anniversary picture discs – since Bowie’s death.

The 25th and final studio album, Blackstar, has become the most popular album since January 2016, moving 446,000 copies across all formats. The 2008 hits collection, Best Of Bowie, is in second place (335,000). The more recent retrospective, Legacy, released in 2016, is third (247,000).

A further three Bowie albums have each shifted over 100,000 since January 2016: Nothing Has Changed – The Very Best Of, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory.
