'Agnes is a profoundly imaginative and soulful artist': Agnes Obel signs to Deutsche Grammophon

Contemporary composer, singer-songwriter, pianist and producer Agnes Obel has signed exclusively to Deutsche Grammophon.

Obel joins artists on the label including Max Richter, Víkingur Ólafsson, Anoushka Shankar and the late Jóhann Jóhannsson.

The signing will also involve Deutsche Grammophon joining forces with Blue Note for North American releases.

Don Was, president Blue Note, said: “Agnes is a profoundly imaginative and soulful artist. All of us at Blue Note Records are honoured and thrilled about the opportunity to present her music to US audiences. I’m really looking forward to hearing her new music and am certain that whatever she creates next will emanate from an inspired, honest and unique place.”

Obel added: “I am very happy to be working with Deutsche Grammophon and Blue Note, two legendary labels with a huge history. I am really looking forward to this next exciting chapter.”

Obel’s had sync placements in TV shows including Big Little Lies, Greys Anatomy, The Royals, Pretty Little Liars, The Leftovers and Tin Star.

Dr Clemens Trautmann, president Deutsche Grammophon, said: "With Agnes we share confidence in the long-term success of artistic excellence and credibility, as well as the intention to inspire many more fans around the world."

Christian Badzura, director new repertoire Deutsche Grammophon, added: "I'm very happy that Agnes is coming to Deutsche Grammophon. As a long-term fan of her music, it's very special to now be working with her. Agnes' musical language, which often moves between dreamy and melancholic, her artistic integrity and her perfected craft have always intrigued me. Her very first album marked her as an internationally renowned artist. Her mix of credible contemporary classical scores, extraordinary song-writing and her performance qualities add to the exceptional nature and, above all, to the success of her music."
