BMG recruit Universal Music's Christian Kellersmann to launch neo classical label Modern Recordings

BMG are launching a new label for contemporary classical, jazz and electronic music called Modern Recordings.

The imprint will feature mailing instrumental artists but will also include some singer-songwriters.

Modern Recordings' first release, out tomorrow (November 15) is Twilight People by German singer Andreas Scholl and pianist Tamar Halparin.

Scottish composer Craig Armstrong, producer Robot Koch, composer Meredi and producer, composer and conceptual artist Hendrik Weber aka Pantha du Prince have all also signed to the label which is being led by BMG's Berlin-based senior vice president new classics & jazz Christian Kellersmann (pictured).

"The first releases show the breadth of ambition of Modern Recordings," he declared. "We will give international musicians a home to realise extraordinary projects. Across borders. Across genres. Across boundaries. We see a great opportunity to offer such artists all the benefits of BMG’s global approach to records."

Kellersmann previously worked at Universal Music in Germany, running its “Recomposed” series which included Max Richter's acclaimed reworking of Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.

"Christian Kellersmann is a pioneer in the development of new classical and jazz music and Modern Recordings is a significant addition to our family of labels," said his immediate boss, Fred Casimir BMG EVP global repertoire & marketing. "We will support artists in this exciting new international market, which – thanks to streaming – has grown significantly in the last couple of years and offers further great potential."

Earlier this year BMG promoted Jason Hradil to senior vice president, global repertoire, also reporting to Casimir.
