Def Jam Africa has announced the appointment of artist, producer, songwriter and record label executive Larry Gaaga to the position of vice president, A&R.
Reporting to Sipho Dlamini, CEO, Universal Music South Africa & Sub-Saharan Africa, Larry Gaaga will lead the A&R division across English speaking markets.
Gaaga's career in entertainment began in 2010 when he joined YSG Entertainment. He has since worked with stars including Wiz Kid, Burna Boy and Davido, as well as establishing a career as a songwriter and producer. In 2020 he signed a publishing deal with Peermusic, encompassing all of his catalogue and future output.
Larry Gaaga said: “I’m excited at the opportunity I’ve been entrusted with here at Def Jam Africa. My experience as an artist and manager at the label, not only gives me a unique perspective to share with our talent, but means I’m well versed in the spirit and culture of this legacy label.”
Sipho Dlamini added: “Larry is a talented creative, astute A&R and strategic executive, expanding his relationship with Def Jam is an exciting next step in Africa’s hip-hop story and a big move for the culture.”
Def Jam Africa was established in 2020, with the UK's 0207 Def Jam following later the same year.
