'UK rap is flipping the music industry on its head,' says XL A&R Caroline Simionescu-Marin

XL Recordings A&R Caroline Simionescu-Marin has told Music Week of her commitment to “get people to invest in the culture” of UK rap and hip-hop.

Speaking in this week’s edition, available now, Simionescu-Marin said: “It’s about creating amazing moments people will remember. Take Stormzy’s campaign, the scene will tell their grandchildren about it. Sales like that scare labels, this music is flipping the industry on its head.”

In the same article, which you can read online here, Simionescu-Marin discusses her first two XL projects, New Gen, a compilation collecting UK underground talent including Ray Blk and AJ Tracey, and One Foot Out, the new album from London rapper Nines.

She also stressed her belief that “The A&R should be the closest person to the artist, and really understand and help deliver their vision”.

Earlier this year, Simionescu-Marin starred at AIM’s annual Indie-Con event, read the report here.
