Glastonbury organisers have confirmed Paul McCartney will headline the Saturday night of next year's 50th anniversary festival. 

The former Beatle is the first headliner to be announced for the 2020 event and will top the bill on the Pyramid Stage on June 27. 

“Having Paul McCartney coming back to headline the Pyramid next year is an absolute dream come true," said Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis. "There really was no one that we wanted more for the 50th anniversary.”

McCartney, who previously headlined the event in 2004, had teased the announcement in an earlier Twitter post.

Eavis was recently honoured with the Outstanding Contribution award at the 2019 Music Week Women In Music Awards. 

Soul icon Diana Ross has already been confirmed to perform in Glastonbury's popular Sunday teatime 'legend' slot on June 29.

This year's headliners were Stormzy, The Killers and The Cure.
