The BBC has appointed Rhys Hughes as head of live music & events, popular music.
In the latest issue of Music Week, Hughes discusses staging next year’s The Biggest Weekend across the four UK nations over the May bank holiday weekend. Hughes was previously head of programmes at Radio 1/1Xtra and has worked at the network since the mid-90s.
“I felt this job was perfect for me because I’d been involved in live events and music for 20-odd years,” he said.
Because 2017 is a fallow year for Glastonbury, the BBC is staging The Biggest Weekend over four days (May 25-28) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with a total of 175,000 tickets available to the public.
Radio 1 (including 1Xtra and Asian Network), Radio 2, Radio 3 and 6 Music will each host sites – yet to be announced – at The Biggest Weekend. Each event will be staged as a two-day festival, with three concurrent concerts being staged on Saturday, May 26.
