Sir Paul McCartney has pledged to support small British music venues. In the wake of Venues Day 2016, which took place yesterday (October 18) at London’s Roundhouse, McCartney issued the following statement. “Throughout my career I've been lucky enough to play in venues of all different shapes and sizes, from tiny clubs to massive stadiums all over the world," he said. "Without the grassroots clubs, pubs and music venues my career could have been very different. I support Music Venue Trust because artists need places to start out, develop and work on their craft and small venues have been the cornerstone for this. If we don't support live music at this level, then the future of music in general is in danger.”
Venues Day 2016 was attended by representatives of venues from across the UK, and Music Venue Trust founder and CEO Mark Davyd outlined the charity’s plans to continue to fight for them. TicketWeb unveiled a new ticketing platform designed to empower indie venues and promoters, while MVT launched the Sound And Vision campaign and Help Musicians UK announced the opening of an outpost in Northern Ireland.
Among other musicians to offer their allegiance to MVT is Everything Everything frontman Jeremy Pritchard, who said: ““Live venues are the lifeblood of music. I have spent half my life in them and most of my happiest and most creative times in them. I want to be part of a campaign that not only sees them survive but thrive.” Public Service Broadcasting, Judas and Stephen Fry also released statements of support.
