This week's Q&A is with Andy C. Real name Andy Clarke, C is a DJ, producer and co-founder of RAM Records. He is set to perform at this year's Boardmasters festival, which will be held in Cornwall from August 9-13.
What was your first job in music?
When I started RAM Records in 1992. I ended up on the road selling an EP in to the shops. [Fellow co-founder] Ant Miles used to drive the car and I used to jump out around London and the black market handing the EP out.
How long have you been in your current role?
Since the dawn of time. I haven’t ever done anything else. RAM is 25 years old this year.
What is your favourite thing about working in the live music industry?
Without a shadow of a doubt, the vibe that you get from the crowd. It’s addictive, you need more of it, there’s nothing better than that feeling of when you’re connected with the audience, it’s a great natural high.
What is the one thing you would like to change about the live business?
Longer DJ sets for everyone, I get to do them every now and then if we put on our own party. You’d think in terms of quality less is more but let the DJs express themselves with longer sets!
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Over the last 12 months, it would have been doing Alexandra Palace and selling that out for an all-night drum and bass DJ set. That was pretty special.
What's the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I’ve been to a few epic Radiohead gigs. I’m a big fan so they always become special special times for me.
