Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have confirmed plans to host live music at its new stadium in 2019.
A club spokesperson told Music Week that planning for summer – after the Premier League season comes to a close – is already underway.
The club has also hinted that the music industry could benefit from facilities better than those on offer at other concert-hosting stadia.
“We are actively planning our summer 2019 programme and our retractable pitch allows for an extended concert window and greater flexibility of dates than has been the case at other football stadia,” read the statement.
“The design of the new stadium enables the hosting of first-class concerts, with acousticians consulted throughout the process and stands with close proximity to the pitch creating a unique atmospheric experience.”
The news comes amidst one of the busiest seasons for stadium concerts on record, with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters and Eminem all doing the rounds this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur will provide another option in a busy marketplace. Coldplay are among the acts to have played at rivals Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, while West Ham’s London Stadium has already hosted Depeche Mode and Guns N’ Roses.
Twickenham, the home of England Rugby, announced plans for expansion into concerts earlier this year.
Last season, Tottenham Hotspur played their home games at Wembley Stadium, which is currently the subject of takeover rumours.
This week it has emerged that the club may yet return to Wembley next season, with concern growing that the new ground – situated on their original White Hart Lane site – may not be ready in time for the August season kick off.
However, any such delay is unlikely to affect the clubs plans for its summer 2019 concert season. The new stadium will also host NFL matches.
