UK venues fare strongly in 2016 year-end ticket sales rankings

UK venues fared strongly in the worldwide ticket sales chart in 2016.

According to Pollstar's year-end rankings, The O2 in London was once again the busiest venue in the world, selling almost 1.6 million tickets last year. New York's Madison Square Garden was its nearest rival, selling just over 1m. 

Manchester Arena (4th) and The SSE Hydro (8th) in Glasgow also both cracked the Top 10 in the arena rankings, selling 851,785 and 751,487 tickets respectively. Birmingham's Barclaycard Arena was the next most popular UK arena, finishing 31st with 422,619 tickets sold.

Other UK arenas to feature were The SSE Arena, Wembley (32nd), Birmingham's Genting Arena (35th), Leeds' First Direct Arena (38th), Sheffield Arena (57th), Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena (64th), The SSE Arena, Belfast (67th), Echo Arena Liverpool (68th) and Motorpoint Arena Nottingham (144th). Dublin's 3Arena was placed 23rd, shifting 502,745 tickets. 

Elsewhere, London's Wembley Stadium was second in the outdoor stadiums/festival sites list, recording 578,560 ticket sales, behind Foro Sol in Mexico City (999,797). Manchester's Etihad Stadium was seventh (386,027) in the rankings, Hyde Park in London was 11th (325,000) and Hampden Park in Glasgow was 29th (162,410). Newmarket Racecourse and York Racecourse also made the Top 100, in 65th and 96th place respectively, while Titanic Belfast came in at No.88. Croke Park Stadium in Dublin was No.18.

London's Royal Albert Hall sold close to 1.2m tickets to finish third in the theatre venue ticket sales chart, trailing only Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional. Other UK entries included Hammersmith's Eventim Apollo (9th, 412,820 tickets sold) and Clyde Auditorium (47th, 150,389). 

London's IndigO2 (32nd), O2 Academy Glasgow (36th) and O2 ABC Glasgow (75th), meanwhile, all made the club venue chart.
