Music Week Award winner Lauren Laverne has reflected on a successful start to her Breakfast Show tenure on BBC Radio 6 Music.
“It’s been a positive shift, I’ve really embraced it,” said Laverne, who starred on the cover of Music Week as her new show debuted amidst a raft of changes at the network.
“I love my job. It’s a mixture of getting to sit and play records with people and waking up with people, starting their days,” Laverne continued.
“It’s such a nice, optimistic time of day, to get to set the tone for how we’re going to feel, to decide, ‘Monday morning feels like this,’ or ‘Wednesday morning should feel different.’ Then Friday morning has got a special quality of its own. I’m enjoying it.”
Having won our Radio Show award, Laverne acknowledged that “any change brings challenges” and thanked her listeners for a good reception.
“You never know how things are going to work out, but to be so well received and get such a welcome from 6 Music listeners is just brilliant, they’ve been amazing,” she said.
We share geekiness about music

The presenter added that she sees the Breakfast Show, which was formerly hosted by Shaun Keaveny, as “three different shows, with every hour probably getting a different audience”.
“It’s more separated than my [previous] show at 10 o’clock when people used to settle in,” said Laverne. “It’s a different energy and you tweak what you’re doing to make the most of that. It’s fun, it’s a different challenge.”
Laverne is preparing for her part in the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury 2019 and opened up about the bond she shares with her team.
“One person on my team is obsessed with ’70s rock, another is so into Italo disco and Pet Shop Boys, then there’s me and my wonky interests and a drum & bass head down in Bristol,” she explained.
“We have different backgrounds, but we all come together and meet in our love of music and our shared geekiness. If you get enthusiasts together there’s lots of common ground. It’s always interesting.”
