Top music supervisors, artists and label sync teams at publishers and labels have been honoured at the 2018 Music Sync Week Awards.
An audience of leading execs attended the sold-out awards ceremony at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London, which was hosted by comedian Tom Ward, who’s been on the road with Joe Lycett and made an impact with his third Edinburgh show this summer.
In the hotly-contested categories, 23 trophies were awarded in recognition of the labels, publishers, supervisors and executives behind a stellar 12 months in sync.
Channel 4 and Netflix co-production The End Of The F***ing World was one of the big winners on the night. Matt Biffa, music supervisor at Air Edel, won the award for Overall TV Series Soundtrack, while the dark comedy-drama secured the Best Sync - TV Show (Drama) award for Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside) by Bernadette Carroll.
Former Supergrass singer Gaz Coombes, now a successful solo artist with Caroline International, triumphed in the Sync Of The Year Category for 20/20, which featured in the BT Sport Champions League Final. The track also won for Best Sync - TV Show.
Sony Music’s Tom Walker was crowned Sync Artist Of The Year. His Top 10 single, Leave A Light On, soundtracked the eye-popping Sony Bravia commercial. Walker follows former winner Barns Courtney, who’s built on his sync success since winning in 2017.
Universal Music Globe won the coveted Sync Team - Record Company award in recognition of their work on the John Lewis Christmas advert featuring Elbow covering The Beatles.
Warner/Chappell were jubilant at collecting the Sync Team - Publisher award. Their top sync work included Skepta’s Shutdown in the much talked about Nike LDNR commercial, which was also named Best Sync - Online Viral Advert.
PIAS are growing their ambitions as a label operation, so the Sync Team - Independent Record Company award is a feather in their cap. The indie has been making waves in the sync world by working with new artists (Confidence Man) as well as pairing established artists such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with BMW.
Downtown have been bolstering their UK roster of late and they’ve now been recognised in the Sync Team - Independent Publisher category at the Music Week Sync Awards. The publisher paired Rex Orange County with Milky Bar and Slaves with Nike.
In the Best Sync - TV Trailer category, the bold pairing of Radiohead and Hans Zimmer paid off as BBC One’s Blue Planet II trailer emerged triumphant.
There were also big wins for the Elton John and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting (Best Sync - Film), which found the music legend a new streaming audience thanks to its appearance in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
There was a warm reaction on the night as the much missed Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker won for Best Sync - Video Game Trailer in Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Paloma Faith’s Skoda collaboration Make Your Own Kind Of Music - which became a hit in its own right - was named Best Branded Entertainment.
