BBC Radio 1 rise Q-O-Q, dip Y-O-Y

BBC Radio 1 was down year-on-year but up on the previous quarter in the Q3 RAJAR figures. The station had a reach of 9.873 million listeners, up 4.4% quarter-to-quarter. The figure represented a dip of 6.5% on the same period last year, yet rises to 10.9m when listeners aged 10 to 14 are included. Radio 1’s YouTube channels, meanwhile, received an average of 1.5m views a day, while its iPlayer channel notched up more than 1.2m views per month. “Reaching 11 million people and putting on a further half a million 10-24 year olds shows that Radio 1 is doing a great job for young listeners, although as ever, RAJAR figures are only part of the picture and should be seen alongside the increase to 1.5 million views a day on our YouTube channel and our 8.5 million users on social media," said Radio 1 and 1Xtra controller Ben Cooper. Elsewhere, BBC Radio 2 dipped 1% for the quarter and 1.6% year-on-year to 15.144m. 

BBC Radio 6 records fifth consecutive record audience

BBC Radio 6 Music continues to thrive, breaking its audience record for the fifth time in a row. The station drew 2.34 million listeners, from a previous record of 2.27m last quarter and 2.19m last year, in Q3 2016. The five consecutive record audiences the station has reached are 2.19m (Q3 2015), 2.2m (Q4 2015), 2.24m (Q1 2016), 2.27m (Q2 2016) and now the latest record of 2.34m (Q3 2016). It was also a strong quarter for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Asian Network, both of which recorded their second highest audience reach following last quarter’s record numbers. BBC Radio’s weekly reach over the period was 34.82m (35.07m last quarter and 35.10m last year) and a share of 51.5% (52.2% last quarter and 53.3% last year). Helen Boaden, director of BBC Radio, said: “Another fantastic quarter for BBC Radio 6 Music. I’m delighted that more and more people are discovering the station's irresistible combination of outstanding alternative music and witty presenters, who love what they play and who effortlessly share their musical passions with the audience. Congratulations too to BBC Radio 4 and BBC Asian Network who have retained many of their new listeners by delivering outstanding content every day.”

Global toast record-breaking figures

Global reached a new record high of 24.6 million listeners every week and can boast the three biggest commercial radio brands in Heart, Capital and Smooth. Its Radio X station now reaches 1.3m listeners every week - its highest ever - a year on from its launch.The Capital brand has reached a record audience of 8.7m listeners, up 213,000 in the past three months and 732,000 in the past year. Heart reached 9.6m listeners every week aross the UK – also its highest ever - making it the UK's most popular commercial radio brand. LBC, meanwhile, reached a record 1.8m listeners across the UK each week, with an increase of 320,000 listeners year-on-year – higher than at any time in its 43-year history. Ashley Tabor, founder and executive president of Global, said: “I’m incredibly proud that Global has achieved another record high reach, hours and share, with 24.6m tuning into a Global station every week and four of our brands scoring all time highs. That’s a pretty special RAJAR card."

Duran Duran to receive ASCAP Golden Note Award

Duran Duran will be honoured with the prestigious ASCAP Golden Note Award at the ASCAP Awards in London on November 10 at One Embankment. The award recognises the global success and body of work of Duran Duran and the evening will be attended by some of the top names in the music and entertainment industry.the band join past recipients such as Jeff Lynne, Lindsey Buckingham, Alicia Keys, Lionel Richie, Elton John, George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones.

Bucks expands sync team

Bucks Music Group has expanded its sync division with three new appointments as well as promoting from within. Holly Manners joins from leading music supervision agency Soho Music and will take on a new bespoke composition role at Bucks; Angus Fulton joins as senior licensing manager and Tom Frank joins from [PIAS] as sync executive and will be responsible for placing music in TV and video games with a focus on new signings and releases. Finally, after completing Bucks’ internship programme, Charlotte Robson has been given a full time position as sync assistant. 

AEG dominates arena rankings

AEG Facilities, the leading sports, entertainment and venue operator in the world, leads Pollstar’s Q3 rankings of the world’s top arenas, with a total of 61% of ticket sales in the Top 5 arenas. AEG’s The O2 in London once again tops the charts at No.1, with more than 1 million tickets sold in the period, while Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, ranked No.1 in the U.S. and No.5 worldwide. The O2 has led the rankings every year since it opened in June 2007 while AccorHotels Arena (Paris, France) ranked Np.44 worldwide, giving AEG Facilities three venues in the Top 5.

Roc Nation signs Gavin Rossdale

Roc Nation has signed Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale to its roster to an exclusive publishing deal. "I’m thrilled to be partnering with Roc Nation for the next chapter of my career," said Rossdale, who is a coach on the new series of The Voice UK. "This is a creative company with a forward-thinking team and a passion for music. I’m excited for what lies ahead," he added.
