Radio 1 DJs to host free sessions at Hull's BBC Radio Academy

BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning have revealed plans for BBC Radio 1’s Academy.

The BBC Radio 1 Academy provides a programme of outreach activity in the run up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Hull 2017m which aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in their creative careers. Featuring a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity, the event will kick off its residency in Hull on February 10-11

As part of the initiative, the station’s Live Lounge and other live performances will transmit from the Academy, while BBC Introducing gigs will provide a platform for local bands and artists. Artists from a variety of genres will host Q&A sessions and practical workshops that will see attendees learn song writing and performance techniques from established talent.

Meanwhile, Radio 1 DJs will deliver personal insights into their careers, and attendees will find out what goes on behind the scenes at the station.

The Radio 1s Academy is free to attend, with details on availability to be announced nearer the time.

Alice Levine, Radio 1 DJ, said: “There’s going to be loads for young people to get involved in over the coming weeks and months in Hull in the build up to Big Weekend and we can’t wait to kick off BBC Radio 1’s Academy in the city.”

Louise Kattenhorn, Radio 1 editor, added: “Radio 1’s Academy always brings such brilliant and motivating events. We are relishing the chance to meet the talented young people of Hull and we’re inspired by the passion and enthusiasm for creativity we’ve already seen from them.”
