Radio 1 highlights commitment to specialist music ahead of Ibiza weekend

BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra head of programmes, Rhys Hughes, has highlighted the station’s commitment to specialist music ahead of its annual Ibiza Weekend event, which takes place from August 4-6.

Now in its 21st year, the annual Ibiza Weekend has become a key fixture on Radio I and 1Xtra’s live events calendar. And, according to Hughes, one of the main reasons behind its continued success the station’s dedication to championing specialist music.

“We have to make sure that not only is the Radio 1 dance roster really up to date, but also make sure we bring in the right guests,” he told Music Week. “Calvin Harris’ only Ibiza appearance last year was with Radio 1.

“And programmes like the Residency, previously called In New DJs We Trust, have been key in us being reactive. We have DJs on there for six months so that we can regularly refresh that roster and pick up on any new scenes out there.

“From 7pm on Radio 1 and 1Xtra we go completely specialist. We had a rock all-dayer last month. We had a ten-hour celebration of independent record labels on July 4.”
