Radio 1's Ben Cooper talks audience strategy and 50th birthday audience boost

Ben Cooper has told Music Week about his hopes for a strong RAJAR showing for Radio 1 as a result of the 50th birthday celebrations.

The Q4 2017 figures – revealed tomorrow (February 7) – will show whether the network has built on the stabilised audience of 9.7 million in the prior quarter.

Speaking in the latest issue of Music Week, Cooper said he is hopeful of a boost from the birthday events including Live Lounge Month featuring Jay-Z, Pink, Foo Fighters and Miley Cyrus.

“It was a phenomenal celebration of not only music of today, but also looking back at some of the records and songs that had inspired the artists of today, so I hope that brought in audiences and we’ll see that in the latest RAJARs,” he said.

Cooper said the new weekend line-up featuring Maya Jama and Jordan North was a “fantastic opportunity”. The schedule changes take effect on February 24.

The Radio 1 boss also outlined his vision for the station to maintain its lead as the No.1 youth network and compete with streaming services.

“I’m very keen that we keep in touch with our audience, because if we can see how they’re changing in their consumption then we can stay close to them,” he said.
