Radio 1Xtra celebrates 15th birthday

BBC Radio 1Xtra is 15 years old. The station is marking the anniversary with a range of programming and special guests over this week (August 14-18).

As well as highlights from the station’s archive, listeners will experience urban music selections from 1Xtra’s history. On the August 16 anniversary, 1Xtra DJs will dedicate one hour to music from each year from 7am.

Professor Green, Chip and Tinchy Stryder are among the guests taking part in the celebrations.

Ben Cooper, Controller, Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network, said: "I'm proud of 1Xtra's authentic voice, its growth from half a million to a million listeners, it's skill in providing the wider media with a greater diversity of presenting talent, and its ability to support and establish exciting new British artists. It's been an amazing 15 years for the station which has grown and become a huge asset to its young audience, the music industry and the BBC."

The station has 1.08 million weekly listeners, according the latest RAJAR figures.
