Big Deal Music has struck a sub-publishing agreement with Australasia’s Mushroom Music Publishing.
Launched in 1972, Mushroom has focused on writers from Australia and New Zealand, with a client roster including the likes of Vance Joy, Nick Murphy (Chet Faker), D.D. Dumbo, Violent Soho, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Temper Trap, Birds of Tokyo and The Rubens.
The two companies have shared a connection for many years. Big Deal founder Kenny MacPherson’s relationship with Mushroom Music dates back to his days as president of Chrysalis Music Publishing, where he first sub-published its catalogue.
MacPherson established Big Deal Music Publishing five years ago with colleagues Jamie Cerreta and David Ayers, choosing Mushroom to represent the company in New Zealand and Australia.
MacPherson said the pairing between the two companies has “finally come full circle… Michael [Gudinski, founder], Ian [James, MD] and the entire Mushroom team are more than business partners to us. They are family.”
Mushroom’s James added: "There has always been good business involved with a strong friendship and mutual respect between all of us. When our sub-publishing rights became available in North America. Michael and I thought this was the right place for our writers.”
The catalogue extends from the late ‘60s, including the likes of Eagle Rock (Daddy Cool) and The Loved One (The Loved Ones), through to newcomers such as Mansionair, Julia Jacklin and Slum Sociable.
