Warner/Chappell UK MD Mike Smith is “delighted” that the BRITs nominations have acknowledged the publisher’s grime and UK rap artists, including Stormzy, J Hus and Dave.
As well as a strong showing on the recorded music side with all 17 of its nominees in UK artist categories – more than any other major – Warner Music’s publishing arm has also performed strongly in the nominations.
Warner/Chappell has three nominees apiece for Mastercard British Album of the Year (Rag’N’Bone Man J Hus, Stormzy), British Male Solo Artist (Rag’N’Bone Man, Stormzy, Liam Gallagher) and British Group (Gorillaz, London Grammar, Royal Blood).
“I want to congratulate our amazing songwriters who’ve been nominated for BRIT Awards,” said Smith. “I’m particularly delighted that the BRITS have put urban artists front and centre of this year’s awards. It means the acts on the stage will reflect the culture on the streets. It should be an amazing night.”
Dave, who signed to Warner/Chappell last year, is nominated for British Breakthrough Act. It follows his win for Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards.
Raye is a co-writer and featured artist on the Jax Jones track You Don’t Know Me, which features in the British Single nominations.
Warner/Chappell songwriters Amy Wadge and Julia Michaels co-wrote tracks on Ed Sheeran’s ÷. MNEK co-wrote IDGAF, the current single from Dua Lipa’s eponymous debut album, which is also up for MasterCard British Album of the Year.
The publisher also represents Katy Perry, who features on the Calvin Harris No.1 Feels, nominated for two BRITs. British Female Solo Artist nominee Kate Tempest’s album, Let Them Eat Chaos, was produced by Warner/Chappell songwriter Dan Carey.
