Faber Music launches new alternative division for 'boutique roster'

Faber Music has launched Faber Alt., a new alternative division with the aim of “showcasing and nurturing the more commercial side” of its catalogue.

The publisher’s new department represents its roster of alternative, non-classical and crossover artists, providing a global rights management service and promoting artists for sync, bespoke commissions and other creative opportunities.

Faber Alt. will also commission special edition books in the vein of Keaton Henson’s recent mixed media project, The Tallowmere Annual.

Lucy Holliday, head of pop and digital publishing is heading up the project with media music manager Catherine Grieves and told Music Week that Faber Alt. is looking to sign new talent, too.

“The Faber Alt. roster of artists fits nicely with the Faber ethos; we look for great quality, diversity and originality, said Holliday.

“We’re actively signing some fantastic musicians in this new area of the business who span a range of genres, often with a crossover into our established contemporary classical and media departments. Our artists also benefit from our successful specialist print publications. As with all areas of Faber Music, our aim is to create opportunities for our Faber Alt. artists, we’ll support them when they want to try new things, help them develop as artists and hopefully form long-lasting relationships”.

Grieves added: “Faber Music is known for its leading classical composers and print, so the idea for Faber Alt. developed from working with artists who have many stylistic strings to their bow. We wanted to create a platform that allows us to showcase and nurture the more commercial side of our catalogue, and from that we have built a boutique roster of talented artists and writers spanning genres from indie and electro, to alt folk and neo-classical."

The current Faber Alt. roster spans artists including Henry Green, Jonny Greenwood, Anna Meredith and Valgeir Sigurðsson.

Recent signings include Mesadorm, a five-piece collaborative project fronted by Blythe Pepino (Vaults) and London-based singer songwriter JJ Draper.

The company is staging a launch event and showcase will be held on tonight (May 10) at The Water Rats, King’s Cross. Mesadorm, Henry Green, Dné and George Boomsma are set to perform.
