David Wood, former head of anti-piracy at the BPI and board member of PIPCU (Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit), is currently under police investigation.
Earlier today, TorrentFreak reported that the former BPI director of content protection was being investigated. The news follows Woods’ dismissal from the BPI for gross misconduct back in December 2015.
A BPI spokesperson has since issued the following statement: “BPI can confirm that a former employee, David Wood, was dismissed for gross misconduct in December 2015. BPI has referred the matter to the Metropolitan Police who are investigating. As investigations are ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment in any more detail at this stage.”
Prior to Wood’s appointment at the BPI in 2002, he served as a policeman for West Yorkshire Police for 15 years, where he reached the rank of detective. In his role leading the BPI’s anti-piracy efforts he regularly appeared in the media to speak out against online pirating.
At the time of his sacking from the BPI, the organisation also reported Wood to the police on account of the severity of his misconduct.
