It wasn’t a great night for UK artists and songwriters at the Grammys.
The only British artists nominated in major categories were Lewis Capaldi (Song Of The Year) and Yola (Best New Artist). In the event, both lost out to Billie Eilish, who made history as the youngest artist to win the Album Of The Year Grammy (When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?).
The 18-year-old won in all of the big four categories – Song Of The Year (Bad Guy), Record Of The Year (Bad Guy), Album Of The Year and Best New Artist. She was the first nominee to pull off a clean sweep since Christopher Cross in 1981.
Dua Lipa, who won best new artist last year, presented the award to Eilish at the ceremony in LA.
"There are so many stellar female producers, artists, songwriters [and] engineers," said Lipa. "If you're in the business and you're hiring, raise your sights to the amazing, talented women out there because we deserve a seat at every table."
Eilish’s elder brother, Finneas O'Connell, picked up producer of the year for his work on Eilish's album.
Among the UK nominees, Chemical Brothers were the big winners with two awards – Best Dance Recording (Got To Keep On) and Best Dance/Electronic Album (No Geography).
Decca-signed YouTuber Jacob Collier also picked up a pair of awards for his versions of Moon River (Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella) and All Night Long (Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals). All Night Long featured Jules Buckley, Take 6 and the Metropole Orkest.
Violinist Nicola Benedetti won the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category for her performance of Wynton Marsalis' Violin Concerto and Fiddle Dance Suite.
Elvis Costello & The Imposters won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Look Now.
UK songwriter and producer Matt Hales worked with God Only Knows on their album Burn The Ships, which was named Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.
Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved was referenced by host Alicia Keys, who covered the US No.1 with reworked lyrics about the year in music. The Scottish singer-songwriter responded with a thumbs-up.
BTS became the first Korean artists to perform at the Grammys. The boy band appeared alongside Lil Nas X.
Lifetime achievement winner Sean Combs was one of the only artists to address the scandal surrounding this year’s ceremony. The Recording Academy has been subject to claims and counter-accusations following the ousting of CEO Deborah Dugan, including allegations of vote rigging.
"Truth be told, hip-hop has never been respected by the Grammys," said Combs. "Every year, y'all be killing us, man."
