Ariana Grande has broken chart records with her new album Thank U, Next.
While the album’s opening tally of 65,214 was a long way off the first seven day’s sales for Ed Sheeran’s Divide (671,542), Adele’s 25 (803,000) and Oasis’ Be Here Now (813,000), it has made its mark on streaming.
Thank U, Next is Grande’s biggest opening week for an album to date. With 59 million streams across its 12 tracks, Thank U, Next is the third most streamed album in its first week overall, behind Ed Sheeran’s Divide and Drake’s Scorpion.
The album has got the most album streams ever by a female artist in a week, breaking her own record set by Sweetener last August.
On the singles chart, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored knocks Grande’s own hit 7 Rings off the top. It makes her the first female artist in UK chart history to replace herself at the top of the chart.
Madonna is the only other female artist who has held No.1 and No.2 simultaneously on the chart, with Into The Groove and Holiday in August 1985.
As her third No.1 in four months, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored means Grande joins Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Justin Bieber among an elite group to have three chart-toppers within a period of 100 days.
Another track from the album, Needy, debuts in this week’s Top 10 at No. 8. It makes Grande the first female artist since Ruby Murray in March 1955 to have three Top 10 singles as a lead artist in the same week.
