The 2017 NME Awards took place at London’s O2 Brixton Academy tonight (February 15), with Biffy Clyro, Skepta and MIA among the evening’s big winners.
Scottish rock outfit Biffy Clyro picked up the Best British Band award, while Skepta scooped the gong for Best British Male Artist and MIA was crowned Best British Female Artist.
Elsewhere, rock legends Metallica were named Best International Band, with Frank Ocean and Christine and The Queens picking up Best International Male and Best International Female Artist respectively.
Best New Artist went to UK star Dua Lipa, while Best Album was awarded to Bastille for Wild World.
On the live front, Glastonbury was named Best Festival, The 1975 named Best Live Band and Adele crowned Best Festival Headliner.
Electro pop pioneers the Pet Shop Boys received the coveted Godlike Genius award, closing proceedings with a live performance. Guitar legend Johnny Marr presented the band with the award, stating: "They've changed pop over three decades. Theyve brought romance, glamour, style and high art to pop."
Earlier this week, NME editor-in-chief hailed the magazine’s annual awards as “an alternative to other awards”.
“What we’ve proved over the past 18 months is that we can talk about anything and have NME’s spin on it,” he told Music Week. “That’s the same as the Awards – if you see artists like Beyoncé being nominated, that doesn’t make the NME Awards ‘less NME’.”
