Bohemian Rhapsody scooped four awards to become the most successful film at The Oscars 2019.
Directed by Brian Singer and Dexter Fletcher, the Queen biopic was celebrated in style as Rami Malek beat rivals including Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) in the Best Actor category.
Malek praised, “A film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life unapologetically as himself”, in his speech.
Bohemian Rhapsody triumphed in three further categories: Sound Editing (John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone), Sound Mixing (Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali) and Film Editing (John Ottman).
Queen also played live at the 91st Academy Awards, which took place last night (February 24) in Los Angeles.
While Lady Gaga missed out in the Best Actress category to The Favourite’s Olivia Colman, A Star Is Born won Best Original Song for Shallow (A Star Is Born). The win followed its Golden Globes triumph earlier this year.
In her acceptance speech, Lady Gaga paid tribute to Cooper and had the following message for aspiring musicians: “If you’re at home, and you’re sitting on your couch, all I have to say is this is about hard work... I worked hard for a long time. It’s not about winning, it’s about not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it”.
Gaga and Cooper also played live, as did Jennifer Hudson, Bette Middler and Gillian Welch and Daid Rawlings. Black Panther’s Ludwig Goransson won Best Original Score.
Bohemian Rhapsody’s OST peaked at No.3 upon release last year. It has 284,779 sales to date, according to the Official Charts Company and is currently at No.4 in the albums chart.
